چکیده

Today’s state-of-the-art spoken language dialogue systems (SLDSs) are mainly system-directed leaving very little initiative to the user. This paper discusses how to enable controlled steps in the direction of mixedinitiative SLDSs. The discussion is based on experience from the design, implementation and test of system-directed dialogue for a spoken language dialogue system and on first Wizard of Oz experiments towards achieving implementable mixed-initiative dialogue. To this end, we present a categorisation of utterances in simulated human-machine dialogue based on an identification of the specific actions users perform with them. The categorisation builds on Speech Act Theory and holds the promise that limited mixed-initiative human-machine dialogue may be implemented in current SLDSs.

Towards understanding mixed-initiative in task-oriented dialogues

Mixed-initiative in dialogue does not mean that either speaker is free to take the lead in the conversation at any time. Rather, who can show initiative, and when, is restricted. In this paper, we define initiative and control as two levels of dialogue phenomena, and give further evidence for our theory of restricted initiative that control belongs to the initiator of a discourse segment. We sh...

Views on Mixed-Initiative Interaction

The topic of initiative is important to a greater understanding of collaboration and interaction. It is a complex characterization of several aspects of dialogue, relating to whose purposes are being concentrated on, and who is in "control". Initiative is important for characterizing both the cooperative and competitive aspects of dialogue, including when and how to respond to the other, as wel...

Have we met? MDP based speaker ID for robot dialogue

We present a novel approach to speaker identification in robot dialogue that allows a robot to recognize people during natural conversation and address them by name. Our STanford AI Robot (STAIR) dialogue system attempts to mirror the human speaker identification process. We model the robot dialogue problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and apply a reinforcement learning algorithm to try t...

What is Mixed-Initiative Interaction?

In this paper we review the unsettled definitions of initiative and mixed-initiative, discuss a set of dialogue fragments or situations that raise questions about the role of initiative (as traditionally defined), and introduce some ideas leading toward a theory of initiative as a composition of more fundamental factors such as choice of speaker, task and outcome.
